Ash

Fraxinus excelsior

ash tree

Ash was the favored wood for spear and arrows due to its strength and straightness, but it was also used with elm to make potent love charms. It is supposed to have warding powers against black magic, and was possibly used for "limb runes." These runes were carved on the limb of a tree in order to transfer worts from a man to the tree (the tree being stronger and more capable of dealing with the worts).

The Ash was known to have protective qualities, it is used to make brooms for purification, wands for healing and staves to ward off evil. The leaves can be placed beneath a pillow induce psychic dreams or scattered to protect an area, they also bring luck and good fortune when carried in a pocket of bag worn around the neck.

The ash is hallowed to Woden (Odin) and Eostre, and was the traditional tree used for the yule log.
