THOR
God Of Thunder
Thursday is named for the god Thor or Thunor, son of Odin, he is the mighty thunder god who protects us and the gods from the destructive forces of the giants. Thor wields a powerful hammer "Mjollnir", made for him by the dwarves. The hammer has the power of lightning, and always returns to his hand when thrown.
Thor was a great traveller, and often travelled to the land of the giants, sometimes he would take the god Loki with him and together they would have adventures, here is the story of one of them:
Thor and Loki travelled to the land of the giants, but before they were allowed to stay in the halls of the giant king they had to prove they were masters of any special skill. Loki announced that he could out eat any of the giants, so huge platters full of meat were brought in and loki had no trouble devouring every scrap of meat. His opponent, however, had eaten meat skin and bone on his platter, so Loki lost the challenge.
Thor then challenged the giants to a drinking competition, so the giants brought out a huge drinking horn and told Thor to empty it. Thor drank and drank until he felt he would explode, but the horn still looked almost full. Thor was angry and frustrated with his defeat, and decided that his strength was his best skill and the one he could use to defeat the giants. The giant king bought in a large cat and asked Thor to lift it. Thor struggled and used all his strength but only succeeded in lifting one of the cats legs. Now he was really angry and wanted to fight, so the king called for someone for him to wrestle with. Thor was insulted when an old crone shuffled into the room, he thought this would be an easy victory, but he could not move the old woman, she, however, managed to throw him off balance and he fell to the ground.
Thor was completely humiliated, but the king of the giants felt sorry for him and explained how he had been defeated so easily. Loki had not lost the eating contest to a giant, but to a wildfire which can consume entire forests in one sitting. The other end of drinking horn was connected to the sea, and Thor had managed to drop the level of the sea by one inch with his drinking. As for the cat. Well, one of the cat's legs which Thor had managed to lift off the ground was actually the tail of the Midgard Serpent. And the old crone which Thor had wrestled with, was nothing but "old age" itself, and no-one can defeat that.
The giants were actually amazed that Thor managed to achieve so much. The giants told Thor it was time to leave and warned him that they would protect this domain again with deception and illusion if the thunder-god ever returned. Thor was outraged by the deception, and would have killed the king, had the giant not vanished out of thin air. Thor and Loki had no choice but to return home.
